A repeat breeder is a cow or buffalo that comes into heat normally, looks healthy, but does not conceive after three or more inseminations. Every missed heat costs about three more weeks without a calf and without the next lactation. For most dairy cows the goal is one calf every 12 to 13 months, and a little longer for buffaloes.
The common causes
1. Insemination at the wrong time
This is one of the most common reasons, and the easiest to fix. The egg is released roughly 10 to 14 hours after standing heat ends. Use the AM-PM rule:
- Heat first seen in the morning: inseminate the same evening.
- Heat first seen in the evening: inseminate the next morning.
2. Heat not seen properly
Buffaloes in particular often show quiet heat, mostly at night or early morning. Check animals at least three times a day, including early morning and late evening. Signs of heat:
- She stands still when another animal mounts her. This is the surest sign.
- Clear, stringy mucus from the vulva.
- A swollen, reddish vulva.
- Bellowing, restlessness, frequent urination and a short drop in milk.
Write down every heat date. A cow that comes back after about 21 days did not conceive. One that comes back at an irregular time needs a vet check.
3. Poor nutrition
- Energy: a cow that loses a lot of condition after calving often does not hold a pregnancy. Feed enough concentrate and good green fodder in early lactation.
- Minerals: phosphorus, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt and iodine all matter for fertility, and dry fodder and straw are low in several of them.
- Vitamins A and E, which are low when green fodder is short.
Give a good mineral mixture every day at the dose on the pack, not only when the cow is in heat. Mix Mix and Super Mix-Mix are daily mineral supplements with chelated trace minerals.
4. Hidden uterine infection
After a difficult calving or a retained placenta, a mild infection can stay in the uterus without obvious signs and stop the embryo from settling. Cloudy or flaky mucus during heat is a clue. Your vet can examine the cow and treat it. BM-Utro Forte is a herbal feed supplement for uterine care after calving.
5. Summer heat
Conception rates fall in hot months, especially in crossbred cows and buffaloes. Shade, water, fans or splashing water help. See our heat stress guide.
6. Semen and insemination technique
Frozen semen must be thawed and handled correctly and placed at the right spot. Use a trained AI technician or the vet, and ask for the bull and batch details on the AI record.
What to do with a repeat breeder
- Check your heat records and AI timing first.
- Ask your vet for a rectal examination to check the uterus and ovaries.
- Deworm the herd on your vet’s schedule.
- Start daily minerals and fix the ration for at least a few weeks. Fertility improves slowly, not in a day.
- Keep the cow cool and give her clean water.
Heat O Fast is a mineral, vitamin and herbal kit to support the return of heat and fertility. It works best alongside the steps above, not instead of them.
Quick checklist
- Heat checks three times a day, with written dates.
- AM-PM rule for insemination.
- Mineral mixture every day.
- Vet examination after three failed services.
